"Citizen Watch Co., Ltd." is a famous Japanese manufacturer of clockworks and watches based in Tokyo (Japan). Citizen has been primarily chartered as “Shokosha Watch Research Institute” in the year 1918. The concern was established in 1924 when the first product – a small pocket watch called “Citizen” – was positioned on the market. In 1930 the company assumed the name “Citizen Watch Company”, too. The founders once have been chosen the name Citizen because they tried to find a direct way to the people’s heart. This is still today the notion behind watches made by Citizen.
The world’s largest producer of watches
In the summer of 1936 Citizen started exporting watches to different areas throughout Asia. Since 1958 the company expanded enormously and started to export watches to Europe and the United States. Today Citizen Watch is a subsidiary company of the “Citizen Holdings”, which is presently famous for the so-called Cincom exactness lathe machine tools. Within the last eighty five years, the company was able to expand their business all over the world. The remuneration of this effort: Citizen has been successful established as a well-known global brand. Today it is the world's biggest producer of watches and the market leader in watches based on a technologically advanced level, an award given every year to the company since 1986. Citizen’s achievement of “world firsts” is unequalled.

For instance the debut Japanese wristwatch including a wake-up-function was launched by Citizen in 1958. In the 1970ties Citizen developed the debut quartz watches with LCD display and afterwards also the slightest LCD watch ever. In the early 1990ties Citizen started the premier series production of watchcases consisting of titanium. In addition to that, they designed the leadoff voice recognition watch which was another big milestone in their history. Beyond that the company was an outrider in developing dive watches for professional use. A highlight was the included bathometer – no one else was able to offer a similar special function. Additional, Citizen is famous for its Eco-Drive collection of light powered watches. Fuelled only by light, it doesn’t need any batteries. Designs reaching from dress to athletics (e.g. professional dive watches), Citizen offers an assortment for everybody and every occasion.
Most important competitors: Seiko and Casio
Moreover Citizen is one of at least three Japanese manufacturers, which further produce mechanical clockworks. Clockworks that are not used in watches compounded by Citizen have got the brand name Miyota. The company’s most important competitors are Seiko and Casio. Aside from nearly all kinds of watches, Citizen also produces several calculators and slight manageable electronic organizers.
