The Swiss company “Swatch Group LTd.” was founded in 1982 and is considered as the world’s biggest watch manufacturer of the modern era. This company is the result of the fusion of the two famous Swiss watch manufacturers called “ASUAG” and “SSIH”. The headquarter of the Swatch Group is located in Biel (Switzerland).
Their products range from watches to jewellery and electronic timekeeping-systems. The brand name “Swatch” was for the first time brought on the market in March 1983. At present, the company has nearly 24.000 employees all over the world.
Swatch watches combine fun and functionality
The origin meaning of the word “Swatch” was “Second Watch (S’Watch)”. This name was part of the new marketing concept of the Swatch Group to offer a casual watch which combines fun and functionality. Inventing the slightest watch in the world was also part of the plan. However, very soon the name “Swatch” became one of the most popular brands worldwide. In addition to that, Swatch defied the aggressive increase of Japanese manufacturers like Seiko and captured a big place in the market at once.
Within the first two years, the company was able to sell more than 3,5 million watches
Swatch succeeded in restoring Switzerland as a key figure in the wristwatch market worldwide. Zurich (Switzerland) was the place, when in 1983 the company introduced their first twelve collections of Swatch watch models. Already within the first two years, the Swatch Group was able to sell more than 3,5 million timepieces.
Their big advantage is the cheap production of the watches. Manufacturing costs of a Swatch have been approx. 80 percent cheaper than the costs of their opposing companies. A fully automatic mounting is the explanation behind their cheap production.
The newest model – an Internet-connected timepiece
Currently, Swatch offers a lot of miscellaneous types of timepieces including diving watches, the cult plastic watches and fully metal-bodied watches. The newest model is an internet-connected timepiece which is able to download weather reports, brand-new headlines and other data. Seasonal themes took also centre stage during the developing of new models. Some of these watches are additionally decorated with diamonds. On the other hand children really love the famous “Flik-Flak”-collection.
The Swatch brand associates five different families of watch types: The “Swatch Originals”, the “Swatch Irony”, the “Swatch Skin”, the “Swatch Beat” and finally the “Swatch Bijoux”.
